about

The basement of the Rafferty house is where my true love of music began. It had its own distinct smell like a pizzeria or coffee shop. Like one of those shops, with the smell came an anticipation of something great. In this case it was tunes. There was nothing more exciting to hear a nice tune for the first time, becoming obsessed with it, and slowly chipping away at learning it. When I would nail down a phrase, I felt I could do anything. I first learned "The Basement Reel" when I was in high school but forgot it as it is uncommon. I never wrote a name down or got the story behind the tune unfortunately. "The Sandymount" was a tune made famous by the legendary Ballinakill Ceili Band. I had the privilege of walking around Ballinakill with Rafferty as he pointed out the houses of some of the Moloneys who were in the band. Sandymount is a beautiful spot in Dublin on the water where the poet William Butler Yeats was born. I dedicate this track to Theresa Rafferty for always being so welcoming and encouraging to me as a young man being in her house for lessons.
