about

The Hollerans come from the parish of Killasser, Swinford, County Mayo, about two miles from the River Moy. According to family stories, my great uncles Pat and Michael Holleran played fiddle around the turn of the 20th century. Unfortunately the two fell in the river while crossing one day, caught pneumonia and died. They are buried in plot 10 in Killasser cemetery. My grandfather Tom Holleran spent a significant time on the river working on the Moy Drainage Project, which aided in the flow of the river. I'd like to dedicate this track to all Hollerans both living and dead. Although we may all live in different parts of the world with some of us dead and gone, we are all still connected and come from the same place.

I first heard this song and air from the singing of Colm O'Donnell from Monalea, just over the Mayo/Sligo border. The song was made popular by Seamus O'Duffy but apparently, the original title of the song is "Davitt's Lover's Lament," describing events of Michael Davitt's life. Michael Davitt was one of the key figures in establishing the Land League in Ireland, which allowed Irish tenants to gain ownership of their land. After being jailed for a short while in England, be began his crusade for the Irish people by promoting non-violence to achieve his goal and it is said that Gandhi praised him for his ethical approach. The air of the song is also closely related to the song "Liam O Raghallaigh," which is a Mayo song sung in the sean-nos tradition.
