about

"Sonny Comer's" comes from the playing of both the fiddle player Lucy Farr and Jack & Father Charlie Coen. I seem to play a combined version of the two they recorded. I first heard it on the recording The Branch Line, which is a treasure of East Galway music. Although I didn't spend too much time with Jack, he was always generous and encouraging. "The Humours of Ballyconnell" comes from the classic recording Feadog Stain II by Mary Bergin. I find this tune to be one of the most unique in the Irish tradition as it seems to unconventionally change keys and in turn expresses the waves of different emotions that can pass through you at any given moment. It is a prime example of the stream of consciousness that traditional Irish music can convey.
