about

The house where my father was born is at the foot of a tall hill with an old fairy fort on top. There are legends that the fort is a burial plot and is haunted ground. From the top of this hill, you can see Croagh Patrick (which is on the cover), Neiphin Mor, the Ox Mountains, and the runway of Knock Airport. The week we would spend every year on the family farm was filled with playing tennis on the empty silage pitch with manure bags as a net, bike rides to Lough Talt, and races down the hill. The races were intense as you had to watch out for the cow muck while running as fast as you can. The race would end at the potato shed, just after jumping over the lime pit. These were some of the best memories of my childhood. The first time I heard the set dance "Down the Hill" was from the playing of Claire Keville and Liam Lewis at a house concert at the home of Willie and Siobhan Kelly. I learned it from the legendary recording of Paddy O'Brien, James Kelly, and Daithi Sproule.
