about

This set dance is most commonly associated with the legendary piper, singer, and folk lordy-lord Seamus Ennis. I first heard and learned it from the album, The Fire Aflame with Liam O'Flynn, Sean Keane, and Matt Molloy. It is a three-part version of the popular set dance "The Ace and Deuce of Pipering" which my wife Torrey danced for many years. This version comes from O'Neill's Music of Ireland collection in which he credits Sergeant Michael Hartnett of West Cork. O'Neill describes Hartnett as having a "quiet and retiring disposition" and "his mind was a storehouse of rare tunes" as well as "strange and haunting plaintive airs." This version is no exception.
